lyrics
When I crawl out of this hole that I've been in, well I think I'd like to be a painter
Painting portraits, smoking cigarettes and feeling like I feel alright
And when it's all over and it's all up and gone, the sun will still be shining like it supposed to
And thinking about those good times can help you feel warm
But it's just the cold you’re getting used to
And breathing’s just a way of getting by
Well it's all coming down, no use in staring
So I’m looking backwards, through the rearview, getting high
Getting high
When I woke up the morning I’d forgotten who I was, but the folks on the block know my name now
And I am not who I had thought I was, and I am sure that I am not who I am
But I've got some new shoes baby and I'm feeling so fine
And it looks like we’ve got blue skies honey, coming up a’ down the line
But it's just the cold you’re getting used to
And breathing’s just a way of getting by
Well it's all coming down, no use in staring
So I’m looking backwards, through the rearview, getting high
Getting high
I’ve got some new shoes baby and I'm feeling so fine

Jason Isbell is a master storyteller, and his music gives it so much more room to shine. Every song is so lovingly produced with amazing lyrics to make them stand out even more. RabidRabbit
Bright and skipping songs that foreground the sound of the banjo and fingerstyle guitar in music that feels timeless. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 5, 2020
This album speaks to the continuum of African diasporic culture that is central to the vibrant canon of Americana folk music. Bandcamp Album of the Day May 29, 2020
The best I've heard from Steve Earle in a while. The songs have a subtler, earthier tone, tastefully rendered in authentic sounding country/blues/bluegrass stylings. 'J.T' reminds of earlier records like 'Feel Alright' or 'Train a Comin'.
Deep grief, love and compassion is felt on the final track, the only composition from Steve, seemingly written for his son. The rest, composed by JT, do confirm what a great songwriter he really was. tideracer
